EMDR THERAPY

(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (E.M.D.R.) is a structured individual therapy which consists of regularly scheduled sessions to treat and reduce the vividness and emotional response attached to traumatic memories. This therapy is different from typical individual counselling as it does not require you to talk at great lengths about your traumatic experience. Instead, E.M.D.R. works by asking you to focus solely on the retained memories associated to the experience of a traumatic event. Simultaneously, a certified therapist will guide you through bilateral stimulation of the eyes. This is done with the intent of changing how the memory is processed and stored in the brain. Helping to reduce and eliminate the negative effects, emotions, and symptoms caused by the memory.

How does it change the way that memories are processed?

The brain functions differently during a traumatic experience, as our stress response (fight, flight, freeze, fawn) function can impede or disrupt the way we process and store information. In clinical studies, it is observed that E.M.D.R. stimulates neural pathways. This causes the brain to better communicate, allowing for traumatic memories to be further processed and stored.
